Hello, I’ve recently been having major internet issues. I used to have a great gaming router, The D-Link Xtreme N Gaming Router (DGL-4500) Untill it died. We noticed the internet kept cutting off and it would get slower and slower. We purchased countless of Routers after. We are now stuck with some NETGEAR router (Dual Band, Wireless N+, Most expensive). It worked great, Till my mom used her laptop.
Most of the time when she’s on her laptop she’s either on Facebook or streaming her foreign drama/comedy shows. My computer would start reacting a lot slower on any web browser, Online gaming was made almost impossible due to me being kicked out for high pings on games like L4D and TF2. And worst of all, My Xbox 360 Lags incredibly. I can’t even load friends tab on the Home screen that much.
Now my router comes with some feature where it hosts 2 signals. One is 2.4 GHz, and another is 5 GHz. I tried making it so her laptop would connect to the 5GHz signal and I would connect to the 2.4 GHz. Nothing positive came up. If I unplugged my own wireless adapter to my PC, the connection would get slightly better. And I look up and torrent A LOT of things. I’m just so curious as to why my Internet would get such a heavy load from my moms laptop alone. My sisters Mac never causes any problems.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? I can’t just force my mom off her laptop. Is there some kind of settings I should apply to my Xbox 360/ Routers Web page settings?
Thanks for the answers.
Routers Model number is WNDR3700 from NETGEAR. Tried port forwarding, ended up making connections slightly worse.
360 NAT type is Open.
her laptop is likely infected with something and causing a large amount of outbound traffic. when you have too much outbound traffic on your internet connection, everything else goes to crap.
it won’t matter what you do with the router if this is the case. it’s like trying to pour thousands of gallons of water per minute through a tiny hose. changing the nozzle is not going to solve the problem.
I have the same problem. Any time anyone gets on a computer in my home–we have several–my connection is completely shot (though I’m usually the one streaming foreign dramas, so I can’t complain about that). It could be, though, that your Mom has a lot of crap on her computer. My mother has Skype and a gazillion other things, and even if she’s not using those programs, they still muck with our connection. We have to force her to turn them all off each time she gets on, though she usually refuses to bother with it. You might try cleaning up your mother’s computer and getting rid of any programs she doesn’t use, or at least setting them so they won’t automatically load when she turns the computer on. This helps a little.
I’ve also found that if I unplug my Internet cables, brush them off with my fingers or a cloth and then put them back in, my connection gets better. Something about lint or static building up on the cable over time, I guess. You could try that.
I can’t help you with the router problem, because I haven’t figured that one out yet myself. I could, however, suggest that you try and switch your provider to FIOS. I have yet to meet anyone with FIOS who has connection problems. In fact, one friend can run four different computers and two X-Boxes at the same time and still get perfect connection. If I weren’t stuck in a provider contract myself, I’d have switched by now (because although it’s about $100 a month, by the time you add the bills for your Internet, satellite or cable–which FIOS also provides–and everything else, it costs about the same anyway).
