Hello all. I do my own web hosting for a few personal websites I run. I’m upgrading my server and am thinking about switching to Linux and running Apache (I currently run Windows 2003, but have an upgrade to Windows Server 2008 through Dreamspark). Since both Linux and Windows server 2008 are free to me, there is no benefit to Linux other than it will be a little more secure and less vulnerable (yes it is legit because Microsoft gives free software to students through Dreamspark). The only thing is that Apache doesn’t have a GUI and I’d like to use a GUI interface. Also, I’d like to host numerous websites with the one server (IIS does this without a problem, not sure about Linux though). Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
They are personal, non-commercial websites.
i not work with apache a lot but you can do host more the one website on it and if you want a GUI you can look around for linux systems that have a GUI one of my faverty Linux os is ubuntu you mite be able to ues that linux system plus the GUI is simler to apple GUI if you like that kind of thing
hope this help you with that.
and i love useing dreamspark ^_^
You answer the question by saying you care about security. Not that Apache is more secure than IIS, but if well configured is very strong. Also, the experience or tools to hack into it is not at the hands of the casual users. As the other person pointed out, there are gui interfaces you can “load” to facilitate the configuration. For me I use Windows IIS because I like programming with ASP.NET.
Not sure the Dreamspark would be legal if you plan to use the server for commercial purposes. I have access to all OS’s and Server Apps from Microsoft due to my paid membership to TechNet Plus. However, even with this subscription I can’t run these copies in production or commercial environments.
